What are Chakras and Chakra Balancing?

Chakras are the energy centres within your body. They are spinning wheels of energy that help to regulate all the body's processes to boost you emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. There are 114 chakras throughout our body, but in this chakra balancing guide, we will focus on the seven main chakras: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown.

Chakra balancing is about bringing your body into alignment, releasing negativity and absorbing positivity. Keeping your body at ease and reducing dis-ease.

Chakra Balancing can assist with:

Reducing anxiety and stress

Increasing relaxation

Boosting the immune system

Increasing confidence

Overcoming fears and phobias

…and so much more.

When your body is at ease, you feel healthy and balanced. You are happy, have high energy and can function well. But, when your body is at dis-ease, you feel unhealthy and unbalanced. You lack energy and enjoyment and find it difficult to function well in your daily life. Your body needs to be treated with the greatest care, love and respect at all times. It needs to be fed and watered with goodness as much as possible. Most importantly, you need to learn how to listen to the needs of your body and ask questions about your own well-being.

What can cause a dis-ease and how can you bring ease to your body?

If you're hungry, you eat food, but if you don't feed yourself properly, this could lead to mood swings, dizzy spells, headaches, or malnutrition. When you're tired, you have a rest, but if you don’t get enough rest, this can lead to exhaustion, high blood pressure or depression, which can then create other dis-ease within your body. This is why it's important to learn how to listen to the needs of your body and ask questions about what's going on, in order to get to the root cause of the dis-ease.

Here’s a scenario: You’ve been suffering from headaches, you’re feeling stressed, a little anxious and not sleeping very well. What do you do? Do you take a couple of pain killers and sleeping pills to mask the problem and hope it goes away? Or do you try to find the root cause of the dis-ease? Do you take the time to listen to your body and think about what’s going on in your environment?

There might be many factors causing this dis-ease. The headaches might be caused by stresses at work or at home, which has led to your anxiety and lack of sleep. Maybe your sleep is being disturbed, which has led to your headaches and feelings of stress. Trying to find the root cause of the dis-ease is a positive step towards healing.

You need to think about what is causing the dis-ease and what you can do to reduce it? Is your workload too big? Is someone giving you a hard time? Are you waking up often in the night? Once you have found the answers to your questions, you can begin to find solutions and start bringing your body back to a state of ease. So, let’s put down the paracetamol and ibuprofen for a moment and find the true cause of your dis-ease.

Note: Please don't stop taking your regular medication and of course if you need to take painkillers, then do so. Always consult a doctor or healthcare provider if you have symptoms that persist or worry you.

Body Scan Visualisation.

Grab yourself a journal, pen, a bottle of water and find a quiet space to sit.

You are now going to take some time to do a body scan visualisation and see what comes up for you. There might be a mix of different emotions and feelings. Some may bring joy and others may bring sadness. This is all part of your healing journey.

This session can be done in one sitting, or over the course of a few days. Follow your intuition and go with what feels right for you in the moment. You can pause throughout the scan to make notes in your journal, rather than trying to remember everything at the end. When you visualise, you might not see colours or images, it might be a knowing or a feeling that you have about the images, colours or objects that are in your mind.

Let's begin.

Start by sitting or lying down somewhere comfortable, where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, stating “I am open to receiving messages and guidance”. Focus on how you are feeling in this moment and start listening to what your body is telling you. Focus on every part of your body, every inch, from the top of your head to the tips of your fingers and the base of your feet. Give each area your full attention. Allow any thoughts, memories or emotions to rise to the surface with little resistance. If any thoughts are too persistent, just state “I acknowledge you, thank you,” and bring your focus back to your breath, before continuing with your scan. As you do this, you might notice various sensations elsewhere in your body; for instance, while focusing on your right knee, you may feel tingling in your left hand. Be sure to take note of these experiences.

What is your body telling you?

Are there any aches, pain or discomfort? Do you notice a stiff neck, sore feet, stomach cramps or a tightness of your breath? Does a hurt or sad feeling come up when you focus on a certain part of your body? As you focus on your eyes, are you reminded to visit your opticians? When you focus on your hand, does the memory of a breakup or the loss of a loved one come up? Or maybe a happy childhood memory comes to mind? What feelings or emotions are you sensing? Do you cough, sneeze or yawn when you focus on a particular area of your body? Do you feel a great sense of joy at the memory of a special person, place or object. Do you see or sense any colours?

Journal your experience.

Remember, you can pause the scan at any time, if you need to, and make notes in your journal, then continue with the scan when you’re ready. Take your time to write down anything that came up during the body scan. It doesn't need to be written in order, just allow your pen to flow. Try not to view things as good or bad and be honest with yourself. Write down any thoughts - however random.

What feelings, emotions and sensations did you experience? Did any distant memories come up? Whether good or uncomfortable? Did you see or sense any particular colours? Are you aware of a deep rooted lack mindset which might be blocking you from moving forward in your life? You might come to the realisation that something about your lifestyle needs to change.

It's okay if nothing came up at all. Still make a note of that. Sometimes things may come to mind later on, or you may continue to experience nothing too different, except possibly a deep sense of calm and relaxation. Think about your overall feelings, as you are writing in your journal, making a note of this as well. Don't worry if you think you've forgotten anything.

Once you've finished writing, take a little break and do something different for a while. Perhaps go for a walk, or play your favourite music and dance, anything that involves moving your body. If fresh thoughts come to mind, during your break, you can add this to your journal later.

Once you've had a break, you can read back through your journal. Bring your focus to one thing that came up during your body scan. Question why this thought, memory or emotion may have come up. Is there anything that needs to be addressed? Is it a reminder of something special that has happened in your life? Are there any changes you need to start making? Repeat this process for everything else you had noted down. Only you will know why certain things came up and only you will be able to answer your questions. Answers may not come straight away, so please be gentle with yourself. Healing can take time, so do congratulate yourself on making an active decision to start your healing journey today. You are amazing!

Coming up.

In the next post, the Root Chakra will be introduced and you may notice some connections to what you had previously written in your journal. You will learn about the signs of a balanced and imbalanced Root Chakra and ways to help keep your body at ease.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to focus on each chakra, working up to the crown. Some chakras may need more love than others, and you are encouraged to go at a pace that suits you. Chakra Balancing is an ongoing part of your emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Have fun bringing colour into your life every day. Your body will thank you for it!
